Television was the exciting new big technology. Broadcast networks for TV were forming and you could now watch live sports from home. (Well maybe a game once in a while.) $299. - financing available, bought you a 12 inch black and white CRT TV for Christmas. In today's dollars that's over $3,000.
Even so, if you were following the technology back then you knew that console radio in the living room was not going to be there much longer.
